Marje and Bill Chambers have called Los Alamos home since May 1950 and they raised four children
here. The first week they arrived, Marje volunteered to be troop leader for the Hill's only Girl
Scout Troop. She became president of the Los Alamos and Sangre de Cristo Girl Scout Councils.
Named project historian to the Atomic Energy Commission's Los Alamos office, she wrote A History
of Los Alamos as part of her PhD dissertation. Twice elected to the County Council, she also
served six years on the Personnel Board, five as chair. As president of the Los Alamos
Historical Society, Marje chaired international history conferences in Los Alamos during
each of her two terms. She was also instrumental in the establishment of the NM Endowment
for the Humanities. A charter member of the Los Alamos branch of the American Association
of University Women, she became president of the local, state, and national AAUW organizations.
Marje twice received the Governor's Award for Distinguished Women and the New Mexico
Distinguished Public Service Award.
Additional biographical material can be found in the Los Alamos Monitor of March 31, 2003.
