"Los Alamos was a fascinating place in 1954," said Martin Gursky. "It was a small town; at
that time it was a gated community. It was interesting to live in such a place," said
Martin who arrived in Los Alamos with his wife Judy on March 1, 1954. He and Judy brought
up five children in this community. Martin was co-chairman of the committee created to
campaign for public ownership of the gas and electric distribution systems in Los Alamos.
"That was probably the most exciting election I've ever been involved in because we won by
three or four to one,” said Martin. “That has never happened again." Martin served two
terms on the County Commission from 1965-68. In ensuing years, he would act as gadfly,
going to the Council to present arguments on things he felt weren't going right. He was
president of the Los Alamos Jewish Center when the local Jewish community obtained land
from the Atomic Energy Commission and built the Jewish Center on Canyon Road. Martin is
currently president of the Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization.
