Sid Singer arrived on the Hill as a summer student in 1953. After defending his Ph.D. thesis at the
University of Illinois, he was back in Los Alamos to stay by Christmas, 1956. Sid was appointed to
the County's Planning and Zoning Commission in 1975 and helped rewrite the zoning code. A Democrat,
Sid was elected to the County Council in 1979. He became chairman, served a two-year term, was
re-elected in 1983 and served again as chairman.
When Magdalene, Sid's wife of 30 years was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, he spent countless hours
on the Internet, researching and communicating with others about the disorder. He also served on the
board and was president of Los Alamos Retirement Community, Inc. and Board chairman of the Regional
Development Corporation from 1996-98.
Sid was named Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1996 and was also awarded the New
Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award for his civic and business activities.
In 2000, the year Sid was named New Mexico MainStreet Volunteer of the Year, he married Elizabeth Allred.
